A galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter by connecting a suitable high resistance in series with it.

A moving-coil galvanometer (coil resistance GG) gives full-scale deflection for a small current IgI_g (its full-scale/maximum current, corresponding to maximum voltage IgGI_gG across it). To use it to measure a much larger voltage range up to VV, a high resistance RR is connected in series with the galvanometer.

At full-scale deflection, the same current IgI_g flows through the series combination (G+R)(G+R), and the total voltage across this combination should equal the voltmeter's desired full-scale reading VV:

V=Ig(G+R)V = I_g(G+R)

R=VIg−GR = \frac{V}{I_g} - G
