Construction of a cyclotron:
A cyclotron consists of two hollow, semi-circular (D-shaped) metal boxes called dees ( and ), separated by a small gap, and enclosed in an evacuated chamber. The dees are placed between the pole pieces of a strong electromagnet, which produces a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the dees. The two dees are connected to a high-frequency alternating voltage source (oscillator), which periodically reverses the polarity across the gap. A source of the charged particle to be accelerated (e.g. protons) is placed at the centre, between the dees.
