Ascaris lumbricoides, the giant intestinal roundworm, has a body that is elongated, cylindrical and unsegmented, tapering to a point at both its anterior and posterior ends. The entire body is covered by a tough, non-living, resistant outer cuticle, which protects the worm from the digestive enzymes and mechanical action of the host's intestine in which it lives. The two sexes are readily distinguished from each other: the female worm is considerably longer and thicker-bodied than the male, and her posterior end is straight; she is an extraordinarily prolific egg-layer, capable of producing enormous numbers of fertilised, mammillated eggs.
