Overcrowded living conditions, common in urban slums and poorly ventilated housing, are consistently linked with a much higher incidence of infectious disease, through several connected mechanisms. Third, overcrowding increases skin-to-skin contact between individuals and the sharing of personal items such as towels, combs and bedding, which promotes the spread of contact-transmitted infections such as ringworm. Fourth, poor ventilation typical of crowded rooms allows airborne and droplet pathogens to remain suspended and concentrated in the air for longer, increasing the effective infective dose that others inhale.
