It develops only after years of repeated infection and the resulting cumulative, chronic obstruction of the lymphatic vessels by adult worms, which progressively impairs the normal drainage of lymph fluid from the tissues. As lymph fluid accumulates in the affected area — most commonly the legs, but also the external genitalia — the overlying skin and underlying tissue become grossly swollen, thickened and hardened, producing a disfigured, enlarged limb whose appearance is said to resemble the leg of an elephant, giving the condition its name.
