Several drugs of abuse trace their origin to specific hallucinogenic plants. Cannabis sativa is the source of marijuana/charas/ganja/hashish-type products, containing psychoactive cannabinoids that alter mood and perception. The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, yields morphine-derived opioids, including the crudely processed derivative known on the street as smack. The coca plant, Erythroxylum coca, native to South America, yields cocaine, extracted and refined from its leaves. Separately, certain substances are specifically prohibited in competitive sport because they either confer an unfair advantage or endanger the athlete's health: cannabinoids are banned for their psychoactive and performance-altering effects, while anabolic steroids — synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone — are banned because some athletes abuse them to artificially build muscle mass and strength, gaining an unfair edge while risking serious long-term health harm such as hormonal imbalance and organ damage.
