Parasitic castration describes a special, non-lethal form of damage that some parasites inflict on their hosts: rather than killing the host outright, the parasite (or its larval stage) targets and destroys or functionally disables the host's reproductive organs, rendering it sterile. Because the host is not killed, it continues living — and, since the considerable metabolic energy the host would otherwise have invested in producing gametes and offspring is no longer needed for that purpose, this energy is instead redirected towards general growth and body maintenance, which can even make the parasitised host grow to an unusually large size.
