After an infective mosquito bite injects Plasmodium vivax sporozoites into the bloodstream, the very first phase of the parasite's development in the human body occurs not in the blood but in the liver — this is called the exo-erythrocytic (or hepatic/pre-erythrocytic) cycle, meaning 'outside the red blood cells'. The sporozoites invade hepatocytes (liver cells), grow, and undergo asexual multiplication by schizogony, forming a schizont packed with numerous small daughter cells called cryptomerozoites.
