In the mosquito's stomach, fertilisation in Plasmodium occurs by the fusion of two visibly different (dissimilar) gametes — a small, motile microgamete produced by exflagellation of the microgametocyte, and a larger, non-motile macrogamete matured directly from the macrogametocyte. Because the fusing gametes differ in size and motility, this type of sexual fusion is termed anisogamy (as opposed to isogamy, fusion of similar gametes), and it produces a diploid zygote. This zygote does not remain rounded; it elongates and becomes actively motile, transforming into a worm-like structure called the ookinete.
