Sperm are produced in the testes, matured/stored in the epididymis, and transported through the vas deferens and urethra, mixing with accessory-gland secretions to form semen before ejaculation via the penis.
The human male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes, located outside the abdominal cavity within the scrotal sac, which keeps them at a temperature slightly lower than body temperature — necessary for normal sperm production. Each testis is composed of numerous coiled seminiferous tubules, where sperm are produced by spermatogenesis, and interstitial (Leydig) cells located between the tubules, which secrete the male hormone testosterone. Sperm released from the seminiferous tubules pass into the epididymis, a highly coiled tube lying along the testis, where they are stored and undergo final maturation, gaining motility. From the epididymis, sperm travel through the vas deferens (ductus deferens), a muscular tube that transports sperm up and around the bladder toward the urethra. Along the way, the paired seminal vesicles add a viscous, fructose-rich secretion that nourishes the sperm and forms the bulk of the semen volume; the vas deferens and the duct of the seminal vesicle unite to form the short ejaculatory duct, which passes through the prostate gland — a gland that surrounds the urethra and adds a thin, alkaline, milky secretion that helps neutralise vaginal acidity and activate sperm motility.
