The menstrual cycle's four phases are driven by a coordinated rise and fall of pituitary (FSH, LH) and ovarian (oestrogen, progesterone) hormones acting on the ovary and uterine endometrium.
The human menstrual cycle (approximately 28 days) is divided into distinct phases under precise hormonal control. During the menstrual phase (roughly days 1-5), the corpus luteum from the previous cycle has degenerated, causing a sharp drop in progesterone and oestrogen levels; deprived of hormonal support, the thickened endometrial lining of the uterus breaks down and is shed along with some blood, constituting menstrual bleeding, while low hormone levels simultaneously signal the pituitary to begin the next cycle. During the follicular (proliferative) phase (roughly days 5-13), the anterior pituitary secretes rising levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates a cohort of ovarian follicles to grow, one of which becomes dominant; the growing follicle(s) secrete increasing amounts of oestrogen, which acts on the uterus to repair and thicken (proliferate) the endometrium in preparation for a possible pregnancy. Around mid-cycle (approximately day 14), the ovulatory phase occurs: oestrogen levels peak and trigger a sudden, sharp surge of luteinising hormone (LH), along with a smaller peak of FSH, from the pituitary; this LH surge causes the mature Graafian follicle to rupture and release its ovum from the ovary — ovulation. In the luteal (secretory) phase that follows (roughly days 15-28), LH transforms the ruptured follicle's remnant cells into the corpus luteum, a temporary endocrine structure that secretes large amounts of progesterone (along with some oestrogen); progesteron …
