'Test tube baby' is the popular name for in-vitro fertilization, where fertilisation occurs outside the body in a laboratory dish.
In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted-reproductive technique in which an egg (ovum) retrieved from the ovary is fertilised by sperm in a laboratory culture dish ('in vitro' meaning 'in glass', outside the living body), and the resulting early embryo is then transferred into the mother's (or a surrogate's) uterus to continue development.
