Spermatogenesis converts diploid spermatogonia into haploid spermatozoa through mitotic multiplication, meiosis and spermiogenesis.

(a) Spermatogenesis is the process by which male germ cells (spermatogonia) present in the seminiferous tubules of the testis are transformed into mature, motile spermatozoa. It involves three phases: a multiplication phase, in which spermatogonia divide mitotically to increase in number; a growth and meiotic (maturation) phase, in which a spermatogonium enlarges into a primary spermatocyte, which undergoes meiosis-I to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes, and each secondary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis-II to form two haploid spermatids (so one primary spermatocyte yields four spermatids); and a spermiogenesis phase, in which each round spermatid undergoes structural transformation (loss of cytoplasm, formation of the acrosome from the Golgi complex, condensation of the nucleus into the sperm head, and development of the flagellum/tail from the centriole) to become a mature, streamlined spermatozoon. …
