Arteries need thick, muscular, elastic walls to withstand the high pressure of blood pumped directly from the ventricles; veins carry low-pressure blood and don't.

Step 1. Arteries receive blood directly from the ventricles during systole, at high pressure, and this pressure surges with every heartbeat.

Step 2. To withstand this repeated high-pressure surge without bursting or over-stretching, arterial walls need a thick tunica media, made of muscle and elastic fibres, giving them the pulsatile, elastic quality needed to smooth out the pressure between beats.

Step 3. Veins, by contrast, receive blood only after it has already passed through a capillary bed, where most of the pressure generated by the heart has already been lost to friction; venous blood pressure is therefore low and fairly steady. …
