Veins have thinner walls, less muscle, a wider lumen than arteries, and internal valves that stop blood flowing backward.

In transverse section, a vein shows a much thinner wall compared to an artery of similar size, since veins carry blood under low pressure back to the heart. Like arteries, the wall has three layers, but each is poorly developed: the outer tunica externa (adventitia) is relatively thick and fibrous compared to the other two layers; the middle tunica media contains only a thin layer of smooth muscle and very little elastic tissue (unlike the thick muscular/elastic tunica media of arteries); and the innermost tunica intima is a thin layer of endothelium. Because of the thin muscular wall, the lumen of a vein appears comparatively wide and often collapsed/irregular in section.
