An artery has a narrow lumen and a thick, elastic, muscular wall in three coats; the radial and temporal arteries lie superficially.
In transverse section, an artery shows a comparatively narrow, rounded lumen (since arterial blood is under high pressure) surrounded by three distinct layers: the tunica intima (innermost, a single layer of endothelium with a thin basement membrane and internal elastic lamina), the tunica media (a thick middle layer of circularly arranged smooth muscle fibres interspersed with elastic connective tissue, giving the artery its elasticity and ability to withstand pressure surges), and the tunica externa/adventitia (outermost layer of collagenous connective tissue that anchors the vessel to surrounding tissue).
