The left ventricle pumps blood around the entire body at high pressure, so it needs far more muscle than the right ventricle, which only pumps to the nearby lungs.

Step 1. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta to supply the systemic circulation — every organ and tissue in the body, often against gravity and over a long vessel network.

Step 2. The right ventricle, in contrast, pumps deoxygenated blood only into the pulmonary trunk, a short trip to the nearby lungs, at much lower pressure.
