Arteries and veins both have three wall layers (tunica externa, media, interna) but differ in thickness and valves; capillaries are just a single thin layer.

Artery: in transverse section, an artery wall shows three layers — the outer tunica externa (or tunica adventitia), a thick, tough layer of collagen fibres; the tunica media, made of smooth muscle and elastic fibres, thick enough to give the wall a pulsatile quality; and the inner tunica interna (intima), a single layer of flat, compact endothelial cells lining the lumen, with a tessellated pattern at its margin. Arteries have no internal valves, and their lumen is comparatively narrow.

Vein: shows the same three layers (tunica externa, media, interna), but the tunica media is much thinner than in an artery, since venous blood pressure is far lower. The lumen is wider, and internal valves are present at regular intervals to prevent backflow of the slow-moving blood. …
