Leaching = loss of soluble soil nutrients washed downward by percolating water.
Soil minerals (nitrates, sulphates, and other soluble salts) are held loosely in the soil-water solution around soil particles. When water percolates down through the soil profile — from heavy rainfall or over-irrigation — it dissolves these soluble nutrients and carries them below the root zone into deeper subsoil layers or the water table, where plant roots can no longer access them.
