The two identical substances were named Abscisin II (isolated by Ohkuma and Addicott, associated with fruit/leaf abscission) and Dormin (isolated by Wareing, associated with bud dormancy); both were later found to be...

Abscisic acid was independently discovered twice, once as Abscisin II and once as Dormin, before being recognised as the same 15-carbon sesquiterpenoid hormone.

Abscisic acid was independently isolated by two separate groups of researchers studying different plant phenomena, who each gave the compound a different name. F.T. Addicott and colleagues, studying substances that promoted the abscission (shedding) of cotton fruit and leaves, named the compound they isolated 'Abscisin II'. Around the same time, P.F. Wareing and colleagues, studying the substance responsible for inducing bud dormancy in trees before winter, named their isolated compound 'Dormin'. Chemical analysis eventually revealed that Abscisin II and Dormin were the identical molecule, which was then given the unified name abscisic acid (ABA). Chemically, ABA is a sesquiterpenoid (a 15-carbon compound), classified as a weak organic acid, and it acts predominantl …
