Chloroplasts = double membrane + stroma (dark reaction) + thylakoid grana (light reaction). Hill's experiment proved photosynthetic O2 comes from water.

Ultrastructure of the chloroplast: A chloroplast is a double-membrane-bound plastid; the outer and inner membranes together enclose a matrix, the stroma. Suspended within the stroma is an elaborate internal membrane system of flattened, sac-like structures called thylakoids. Many thylakoids stack up like a pile of coins to form grana (singular granum), and these grana are interconnected with one another by tubular membrane extensions called stroma lamellae, forming one continuous internal membrane network. The thylakoid membranes contain the photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls, carotenoids) organised into photosystems I and II, along with the electron transport chain components and ATP synthase — the entire machinery of the light reaction. The surrounding stroma contains the enzymes of the Calvin cycle (dark reaction, including RuBisCO), as well as the chloroplast's own circular DNA and ribosomes, which allow it to synthesise some of its own proteins.
