Figure — Transverse section of a C4-plant leaf (e.g. maize) showing Kranz (wreath) anatomy

Kranz anatomy = a wreath of bundle-sheath cells around the vein, with mesophyll cells around that.

In a transverse section of a C4 plant leaf (e.g. maize, sugarcane), the vascular bundles are surrounded by a conspicuous ring ('Kranz' means wreath in German) of large, thick-walled bundle sheath cells, packed with numerous large chloroplasts that characteristically lack well-developed grana (agranal chloroplasts).
