Kranz anatomy — a wreath of large bundle-sheath cells around the vascular bundle — is the anatomical basis by which C4 plants avoid photorespiration.

In C4 plants (e.g. maize, sugarcane), the leaf shows a distinctive 'Kranz' (wreath-like) anatomy: each vascular bundle is surrounded by a ring of large, thick-walled bundle-sheath cells containing numerous, agranal chloroplasts, and this ring is in turn surrounded by the mesophyll cells. CO2 is first fixed in the mesophyll cells by PEP carboxylase (which has no oxygenase activity and a high affinity for CO2) into a 4-carbon acid; this is transported to the bundle-sheath cells and decarboxylated, releasing CO2 at a locally high concentration exactly where RuBisCO and the Calvin cycle operate. Because RuBisCO in the bundle sheath is thus exposed to a CO2-rich, O2-poor environm …
