Auxin causes apical dominance; the herbicide 2,4-D selectively removes broad-leaved weeds from cereal crops; cytokinins delay senescence and are used to induce shoot formation in tissue culture.
- Apical dominance, the phenomenon in which the growing apical (terminal) bud of a shoot suppresses the growth of the lateral (axillary) buds below it, is caused by the hormone auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA), which is synthesised in the shoot apex and moves downward, inhibiting lateral bud outgrowth.
- Jowar (sorghum) is a monocot cereal crop, while common weeds infesting it are often broad-leaved dicots. The synthetic auxin herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is selectively toxic to broad-leaved dicot plants (it causes uncontrolled, abnormal growth leading to their death) while having little effect on narrow-leaved monocot crops like jowar, making it the recommended hormone/herbicide for this purpose. …
