The four-chambered heart has four one-way valves that prevent backflow and keep blood moving in a single direction through the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
To sketch: draw the heart as a cone-shaped muscular organ divided internally by a septum into a right side and left side, each further divided into an upper atrium and lower ventricle, giving four chambers — right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle. Show the superior/inferior vena cava entering the right atrium, and the pulmonary veins entering the left atrium; show the pulmonary artery leaving the right ventricle and the aorta leaving the left ventricle. Label the four valves: the tricuspid valve (three flaps) between the right atrium and right ventricle; the bicuspid or mitral valve (two flaps) between the left atrium and left ventricle; the pulmonary semilunar valve at the base of the pulmonary artery; and the aortic semilunar valve at the base of the aorta. Each valve is a one-way gate: the atrioventricular valves (tricuspid, bicuspid) prevent blood from flowing backward from the ventricles into the …
