The conducting (nodal) system of the human heart begins at the sino-atrial (SA) node, located in the wall of the right atrium, which generates the rhythmic impulse (hence called the pacemaker). This impulse spreads through the atrial muscle to the atrio-ventricular (AV) node, situated at the base of the right atrium near the interatrial septum. From the AV node, the impulse passes into a specialised bundle of conducting fibres called the Bundle of His (atrioventricular bundle), which travels down through the interventricular septum and divides into right and left bundle branches.
