The pericardium is the membranous sac that encloses the heart, made of two main layers: an outer fibrous pericardium and an inner serous pericardium. The serous pericardium is itself soft, moist, elastic and built of squamous epithelium, and it further splits into a parietal layer (lining the outer fibrous sac) and a visceral layer (which is actually the heart's own outer covering, the epicardium).
