The heart has cuspid valves between atria and ventricles (tricuspid on the right, bicuspid/mitral on the left) and semilunar valves at the two ventricular outlets, all keeping blood flow one-directional.

Each atrium opens into the ventricle on its own side through an atrioventricular opening guarded by a cuspid valve: the tricuspid valve guards the right atrioventricular opening, and the bicuspid (or mitral) valve guards the left. These valves are anchored to the ventricular wall by inelastic chordae tendinae attached to papillary muscles, which stop the valve flaps flipping backward into the atria under the high pressure of ventricular systole. Where the right ventricle opens into the pulmonary trunk and the left ventricle opens into the aorta, each opening is instead guarded by three semilunar valves, which prevent blood pumped out during systole from flowing back into the ventricles during diastole.
