Chordae tendinae anchor the cuspid valve flaps to the papillary muscles, and together they stop the valves flipping backward into the atria during ventricular systole.

Papillary muscles are muscular projections rising from the inner wall of the ventricles, and chordae tendinae are inelastic fibrous cords running from the free edges of the tricuspid and bicuspid valve cusps down to these papillary muscles. During ventricular systole, the papillary muscles contract at essentially the same time as the rest of the ventricular wall, keeping tension on the chordae tendinae; this tension holds the valve cusps firmly closed and stops them from being pushed backward (prolapsing) into the atria by the high pressure generated as the ventricles contract.
