In FM the noise power increases with the modulating frequency, so the higher audio frequencies would have a poorer signal-to-noise ratio than the lower ones. Pre-emphasis and de-emphasis form a matched pair that corrects this.

  • Pre-emphasis: at the transmitter, before modulation, the amplitudes of the higher audio frequencies are deliberately boosted using an RC high-pass type network. This raises the high-frequency components well above the noise.
  • De-emphasis: at the receiver, after the FM signal is demodulated, the same high frequencies are attenuated by an equal and opposite RC low-pass network. This restores the original tonal balance of the audio and, at the same time, attenuates the high-frequency noise picked up during transmission. …
