[!TLDR]

The three basic continuous-wave modulation types are AM, FM and PM (FM and PM being the two forms of angle modulation).

In modulation, some parameter of the sinusoidal carrier v=Vcsin⁡(ωct+ϕ)v = V_c \sin(\omega_c t + \phi) is varied in step with the modulating (message) signal. Depending on which parameter is varied we get different types.

  • Amplitude Modulation (AM): the amplitude VcV_c of the carrier is varied in accordance with the message, keeping frequency and phase constant.
  • Frequency Modulation (FM): the frequency of the carrier is varied by the message, keeping amplitude constant.
  • Phase Modulation (PM): the phase of the carrier is varied by the message, keeping amplitude constant.

Since both FM and PM vary the angle of the carrier, they are together termed angle modulation.

[!ANSWER]

Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation (PM) — with FM and PM grouped as angle modulation.
