In an FM signal the information is contained in the variation of the carrier's frequency about its centre value, while the amplitude is constant. A detector is therefore needed that responds to frequency changes rather than amplitude changes.
The discriminator (FM detector) performs this task: its output voltage is made proportional to the instantaneous frequency deviation of the input signal. As the FM signal's frequency swings above and below the carrier frequency, the discriminator produces a voltage that swings positive and negative in step, exactly reproducing the original modulating signal. …
