Q.What is modulation? Briefly explain the reasons which make modulation an essential step in communication system.
[!TLDR]
Modulation impresses a low-frequency message onto a high-frequency carrier so that the information can be radiated with a reasonable antenna, several channels can coexist, and the signal travels farther.
A message signal such as speech or music lies in the audio band (about 20 Hz to 20 kHz). If such a low-frequency signal is fed directly to an antenna it cannot be transmitted usefully. In modulation the message is used to control the amplitude, frequency or phase of a much higher-frequency carrier, and it is this modulated carrier that is transmitted.
The reasons that make modulation essential are:
-
Practical height of the antenna: For efficient radiation the antenna length must be of the order of a quarter of the wavelength, . For a 15 kHz audio signal , needing an antenna about 5 km tall, which is impossible. Shifting the signal to a high carrier frequency (say MHz range) shortens the wavelength and brings the antenna to a practical size.
-
Avoiding mixing of signals (multiplexing): If many transmitters sent baseband signals directly, they would all occupy the same low-frequency band and interfere. By translating each message to a different carrier frequency, many signals share the same medium without overlapping and the receiver selects the desired one by tuning.
-
Increase in range and effective radiated power: High-frequency modulated signals radiate more effectively and travel over longer distances for a given transmitted power, so communication range increases.
-
Reduction of noise and improvement of signal quality: A suitable modulation scheme (for example FM) lets the system trade bandwidth for better noise immunity.
[!ANSWER]
Modulation is the process of varying amplitude, frequency or phase of a high-frequency carrier according to the message signal. It is an essential step because it makes the antenna a practical size, allows many signals to be multiplexed on one channel without interference, and provides greater transmission range and better noise performance.
