FM receivers add a limiter, discriminator and de-emphasis, use a 10.7 MHz IF and VHF band; AM receivers use a diode detector, 455 kHz IF and MW/SW band.
Although both receivers use the superheterodyne method (mix to a fixed IF, amplify, detect, reproduce), they differ in several respects:
- Detector: an AM receiver uses a simple diode (envelope) detector; an FM receiver uses a discriminator or ratio detector that responds to frequency.
- Limiter: an FM receiver has an amplitude limiter before the detector to remove amplitude noise; an AM receiver has none (it cannot, since amplitude carries the signal).
- De-emphasis: an FM receiver includes a de-emphasis network after detection; an AM receiver does not.
- Intermediate frequency: FM uses 10.7 MHz; AM uses 455 kHz. …
