In a conventional double-sideband (DSB) AM system, the carrier and both sidebands are transmitted, but the carrier carries no information and the two sidebands carry the same information twice. A single-sideband (SSB) system removes the carrier and one sideband, transmitting only one sideband.

Advantages of SSB over DSB:

  1. Power saving: since the carrier and one redundant sideband are suppressed, all the transmitted power goes into the one information-bearing sideband, so much less transmitter power is needed for the same result.
