[!TLDR]

AFC auto-corrects local-oscillator drift to keep the receiver tuned; FM beats AM mainly on noise immunity and fidelity.

AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) loop: in a receiver the local oscillator may drift with temperature or ageing, changing the intermediate frequency and mistuning the station. An AFC loop senses this drift (from the discriminator output) and produces a correcting voltage that adjusts the oscillator back to the correct frequency, keeping the receiver automatically locked to the wanted station.

Why FM is preferred to AM:

  1. Noise immunity: FM carries information as frequency, and amplitude-type noise can be removed by an amplitude limiter, so FM has a far better signal-to-noise ratio.
  2. Fidelity: FM gives higher-quality, more natural sound. …
