Demodulation recovers the message from an AM wave, usually with a diode (envelope) detector that rectifies the wave and filters out the carrier.
Demodulation, also called detection, is the process of extracting the original modulating (audio) signal from the received modulated carrier. It is exactly the reverse of modulation and takes place at the receiver.
For an AM wave the commonest detector is the diode (envelope) detector, whose operation is:
- The AM wave is applied to a diode, which rectifies it — allowing only the positive half-cycles to pass, so the output follows the positive envelope.
- This rectified output is applied to an RC low-pass filter. The capacitor charges to the peak of each cycle and follows the slow envelope variations while bypassing the high-frequency carrier to ground. …
