AGC automatically varies receiver gain with signal strength to keep the output steady and prevent overloading.
AGC stands for Automatic Gain Control. It is a feedback system that develops a dc control voltage proportional to the strength of the received carrier and feeds it back to control the gain of the RF and IF amplifier stages.
How it works: a strong incoming signal produces a large control voltage that reduces the amplifier gain, while a weak signal produces a small control voltage that allows high gain.
Why it is necessary:
- Constant output: the strengths of different stations, and of the same station during fading, vary widely; AGC keeps the audio output/volume nearly constant so the listener need not keep readjusting. …
