A fixed IF gives uniform high gain and constant selectivity for all stations and makes amplification easy and stable.

In a superheterodyne receiver the incoming radio frequency is mixed with a local-oscillator frequency to produce a fixed difference frequency called the intermediate frequency (455 kHz for AM, 10.7 MHz for FM). All the main amplification and selectivity are then provided at this single IF. This is needed because:

  1. Uniform gain and selectivity: since the IF is the same for every station, the IF amplifier can be permanently tuned to give the same high gain and the same sharp selectivity for all stations across the band.
  2. Easier, stable amplification: it is easier to build a high-gain, stable amplifier at one fixed, moderate frequency than to obtain such gain at the many different, higher incoming frequencies. …
