Gray code is a reflected binary code in which successive values are arranged so that each one differs from its neighbour in only a single bit position. This is called the unit-distance (or single-step) property. In ordinary binary, a transition such as 0111 → 1000 changes four bits at once; if the bits do not switch at exactly the same instant, a wrong intermediate value can momentarily appear.
