Erythrocytes are haemoglobin-filled, biconcave, anucleate cells specialised for gas transport, with a lifespan of about 120 days.

Erythrocytes, or red blood cells (RBCs), are the most abundant type of blood cell (about 5 million per cubic millimetre in humans) and are specialised for the transport of respiratory gases. They have a distinctive biconcave disc shape, which increases their surface-area-to-volume ratio for efficient gas exchange and gives them flexibility to squeeze through narrow capillaries. In mature mammalian RBCs, the nucleus and most other organelles (including mitochondria) are extruded during development, leaving the cell packed with haemoglobin, an iron-containing protein pigment that reversibly binds oxygen (forming oxyhaemoglobin) for transport from the lungs to body tissues, and also assists in the transport of a portion of carbon dioxide and in buffering blood pH. Erythrocytes are produced continuously …
