Breathing is a mechanical process of rhythmic inspiration and expiration.

Inspiration: The dome-shaped diaphragm contracts and flattens, and the external intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribs and sternum upward and outward. Both actions enlarge the volume of the thoracic cavity. According to Boyle's law, this increase in volume lowers the intra-pulmonary (air) pressure below atmospheric pressure, so air flows from the atmosphere into the lungs down this pressure gradient, through the nostrils, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles into the alveoli. …
