The Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is defined as the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide evolved to the volume of oxygen consumed by an organism (or tissue) during a given period of respiration: RQ = (volume of CO2 evolved) / (volume of O2 consumed). Its value depends on the type of respiratory substrate being oxidised. For carbohydrates (e.g. glucose), complete aerobic oxidation follows the equation C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy, in which exactly 6 molecules (volumes) of O2 are consumed and exactly 6 molecules (volumes) of CO2 are released.
